Age spots and sun damage are spots of pigment that are darker than surrounding skin. They especially appear on areas of the skin most exposed to the Sun, such as face or hands, and many people wish to have them removed or reduced. They may vary in size, shape, or number and some may eventually become cancerous. Sun damage can also affect your skin without any visible (to the naked eye) signs.
There are many over the counter solutions available, however, these are often costly and not very effective. There are also multiple treatments your physician can administer, including: chemical peels and dermabrasion, light- and laser-based therapies. Depending on your age, skin type, and a variety of other factors, laser and energy-based solutions often provide the best outcomes.
When the laser energy is applied to the skin, it targets the pigment and breaks it up. The body later removes the debris naturally, some pigment may remain requiring multiple treatments. Treatment of darker skinned patients can be more challenging, but a good device used carefully by an expert can provide good results.
